The whole hexagram is about footing

'Lu' means to step, and the figure keeps its attention on the feet the entire way through. Not on strategy, not on what you want, not on whether the power above you is fair. On where your weight lands and whether the ground under it will hold.

That narrow focus is what makes hexagram 10 useful. It is describing a situation where something much larger than you is present and unavoidable, and it declines to discuss whether that is right. It only asks whether you have read the ground accurately and calibrated your step to it. The lake below and the sky above are not negotiating.

Hexagram 10 in love and relationships

The power between you is unequal. That is workable while you keep your footing and dangerous the moment you pretend otherwise. This is a conduct reading rather than a feeling reading.

Inequality in a relationship takes many forms and most of them are unspoken: one person has money, one has more options, one is more invested, one is the one who would be fine alone. The hexagram is not scandalized by that. It treats it as terrain. The second line is the healthy version: even footing, no need to be seen doing it, no appetite for recognition. The text says that composure is precisely what keeps the way open.

The third line is the central warning of the figure. Acting beyond your actual capacity, behaving as if you can see when you cannot, is where the real harm enters. In a relationship that is usually promising a steadiness you do not have.

Hexagram 10 at work and in career

You are treading near something far larger than you. Precision is what that requires. Caution is a different quality and will not do the work. Timidity is not what it recommends and it is worth being clear about that.

The junior person in a room of decision-makers is standing here. So is the contractor inside a large client, the employee whose manager has a temper, and the founder taking money from someone with far more of it. The fourth line describes stepping past something genuinely dangerous in full awareness of what it is, and says that the clear-eyed quality of the caution is exactly what lets the step land safely. Knowing the risk is the safety. Not avoiding it.

The fifth line puts the mirror up for whoever holds the power in that arrangement, and asks whether they can tell the difference between firmness and rigidity.

The step that is audited last

Few hexagrams end by auditing themselves. This one does, at the sixth position, looking back down the whole path to say the outcome now depends on the integrity of every step already taken.

That is a claim about how conduct accrues. Nothing in the earlier positions announces itself at the time; each individual step either was sound or was not, and none of them appear to matter much in the moment. The summit is where the accounting happens. If the walking was honest the position holds and the confidence is earned. If the steps were hollow, arriving is what reveals it.

Careers end this way more often than they end dramatically.
