Advancement and recognition run on different clocks

Two things can both be true: you are further along than you were, and nobody has said so. Hexagram 35 is built almost entirely around the interval between those, and it is unusually patient about how long the interval can run.

Fire above open ground is the sun clearing the horizon. Nothing about that image is subtle, which is what makes the figure's early lines surprising. The first meets resistance and no visible reward. The second carries sorrow because the support that should be there seems blocked or late. Only by the third does anything collective start to move.

Applied to a relationship, that covers the long middle of most good ones. The work has been done, the pattern has genuinely changed, and neither person has marked it. Progress inside a partnership is almost never announced, which means it accumulates without either party updating their sense of where things stand.

The second line carries the specific grief of it. Advancement that comes not by asserting yourself but by holding your integrity long enough for the acknowledgment to arrive, and the text is honest that the waiting has sorrow in it rather than pretending it is serene.

The turn happens at the third. Confidence built through people moving together rather than through one person's initiative, and once others recognize the same direction, momentum carries what solo effort could not.
