Hexagram 44 in practice

Something soft has arrived at the bottom

Five firm lines, and underneath all of them one yielding line that was not there before. That is the whole event of hexagram 44, and its difficulty is entirely a difficulty of scale.

Whatever has entered is currently negligible. It has no leverage, occupies the least important position in the figure, and could be dismissed by anybody looking at the structure as a whole without appearing careless. The text's position is that this is precisely when it has to be recognized, because the only thing it is going to do from here is move upward.

Wind beneath heaven, finding every opening there is. Heaven cannot prevent that and does not try. What it supplies instead is a standard clear enough to tell which of the things arriving should be let in.

Some traditional commentary on this hexagram spends its energy on the gender of the arriving line and on warnings about a powerful maiden. That reading has not aged into anything useful. The structural observation underneath it has: a small entry at a foundation, in a system with no other softness in it, will not stay small.

Hexagram 44 in love and relationships

Something small has just entered and it is easy to be relaxed about it.

The figure covers a genuinely wide range and the range is the point. A single dishonesty, a new friendship with a particular quality to it, a habit one of you has started, a resentment that arrived last month and has not left. In every case the thing is currently minor, and in every case treating it as minor is a decision rather than an observation.

The second line offers the response the hexagram actually endorses, and it is not confrontation. Holding without crushing, the way a container holds, and knowing what not to let go of. Watchful containment rather than a scene. Applied to a relationship that means naming the thing to yourself accurately and keeping your eye on it, which is different from raising it as a crisis and different again from deciding it is nothing.

Discomfort is conceded at the third. Strained between acting and waiting, and forcing a confrontation from there would accelerate exactly what you are trying to manage.

Hexagram 44 at work and in career

Something has come into the organization at the bottom and nobody senior has looked at it yet.

The workplace versions are unglamorous and familiar. A shortcut that worked once and is becoming the method. A hire whose standards are slightly below the bar and whose team is now calibrating to them. A client relationship that started with one exception. None of these register as decisions at the time and all of them propagate upward.

If you are the person with authority, read the fifth line. From that height, neither alarm nor indulgence: an accurate assessment, held in view, without being drawn into the thing being assessed. The text is asking for a quality of attention rather than an action, which is why it is so rarely what actually happens.

Distance mistaken for containment

The fourth line describes somebody who has put space between themselves and what arrived, and feels safer for it.

The figure says the feeling is wrong and gives a structural reason. Being far from the point of entry does not exclude you from a system that the entry is inside. Every part of the structure eventually meets what came in, and the ones furthest from the foundation meet it last and least prepared.

That line is aimed at senior people specifically, because seniority is distance. The executive who has not encountered the problem is not evidence that the problem is contained. They are evidence about propagation speed.

The figure it faces across the book

43, Breakthrough is its inverse, and the correspondence is unusually exact: one soft line among five firm ones in both, at the bottom here and at the top there.

Read as a sequence they describe a single life. Something enters at the foundation, is not addressed, works its way up, and eventually sits at the summit as the last thing standing between a situation and its resolution. Hexagram 44 is that thing on the day it arrived, when removing it would have cost almost nothing. Hexagram 43 is the same thing years later, when removing it requires five firm lines, a formal proceeding and a warning about not becoming what you oppose.

The distance between those two figures is the entire argument for taking small things seriously.

While it is still the size it is

Nothing in this hexagram asks for alarm, which is a different thing from what it does ask for.

An alarmed response to a small entry is its own failure, and the third line says as much. What the figure wants is recognition: seeing the thing accurately at the size it currently is, and holding an honest estimate of where it goes if nothing changes.

By the sixth line the encounter can no longer be handed downward or deferred, and whatever went unhandled below arrives to be dealt with directly. Everything in the figure below that point was an opportunity to make the meeting cheaper.
