Hexagram 31 in practice

Two people in a room, before anything is said

Something happens in the first half minute of a meeting between two people, and almost none of it is verbal. Postures adjust. One person leans in a fraction. Attention finds a direction. Hexagram 31 is the book's attempt to describe that, and it does so with more physical precision than nearly any other figure in the sequence.

Read the six lines in order and you are walking up a body. The toes. The calves. The thighs. The heart. The back of the neck. The jaw. Influence begins somewhere below thought and rises, and by the time it reaches the mouth the text has turned into a warning: talk has outrun feeling.

Why the book puts attraction first

Hexagram 31 opens the second half of the King Wen sequence. The first thirty figures are traditionally read as the canon of heaven and earth. From here the book turns toward the human world, and the first thing it chooses to say about that world is that people are drawn to one another. The placement is a statement of priorities.

The inverse of 31 is 32, Duration. Attraction inverted is endurance, and the two figures are a pair. Between them sits the oldest argument in the book about relationships: what begins as resonance has to become something that survives repetition, or it does not survive.

Resonance is not persuasion

The English name has drifted toward marketing, and the drift matters. Persuasion is something one person does to another. What 31 describes moves both ways at once and belongs to neither party. Lake resting on Mountain: the water settles into the shape the stone already had, and the stone is slowly changed by the water sitting in it. Neither is acting on the other. They are finding out what shape they make together.

Which also means the hexagram is not a compliment. Influence here is a physical fact rather than a moral achievement. It happens whether or not anyone intended it, and that is the part most readings skip.

Hexagram 31 in love and relationships

The attraction is mutual and it is early. Let it move at the speed it is actually moving. This is a courtship hexagram in the oldest sense. Something real is starting, and the text's entire interest is in the stretch before anybody has decided anything.

The line texts are unusually practical about the failure modes. The second describes acting on an attraction before it has risen through the body, which produces embarrassment rather than connection. The third warns against following every sensation and calling it resonance, which is the distinction between chemistry and compatibility that most people learn the expensive way. The sixth describes influence that reached the jaw without ever reaching the heart: a person talking about intimacy instead of being in it.

If you cast this about an established relationship or a marriage, 31 asks a quieter question. Are you still available to be affected by this person, or have you settled into a shape that no longer moves when they do?

Hexagram 31 at work and in career

You carry influence at work that your title does not account for, and the way to use it is to stop pushing and become worth settling into. This figure is about how you change a room, not about your title.

It turns up in negotiations where both sides are being entirely reasonable and nothing is moving, and it suggests the obstacle is not the argument: neither party has yielded enough to give the other any surface to settle into. It turns up in mentorship, in interviews, in the first month inside a new team, and in the ordinary fact that one person's mood sets the weather for everyone else while nobody names it.

The fourth line is the career line. When it moves, 31 becomes 39, Obstruction, a fair description of what happens when you start steering something that had been working on its own. Move the top line, the one talking without the heart behind it, and the figure becomes 33, Retreat: the withdrawal that follows saying more than you meant.

The mountain does nothing at all

Move the first line, the one felt in the toes, and this hexagram becomes 49, Revolution. The book is not being subtle there. Very large changes have very small beginnings, and they usually begin in the body.

The useful question 31 raises is not who is influencing whom. It is whether you are currently still enough for anything to reach you. The mountain in this figure does not reach, persuade or pursue. It holds a shape open, and the lake finds it.
