Following is an active skill

Something is already moving and it did not start with you. That is the premise hexagram 17 begins from, and everything it has to say follows from accepting it.

Thunder generates the movement underneath; open water above receives it. The lake's contribution is easy to underrate and impossible for anything inert to perform. It takes an impulse it did not produce, holds it, and hands back a direction the impulse did not previously have. A puddle cannot do that. A lake can, because it has depth and a shape.

The competence this figure describes, then, is the ability to identify what is genuinely in motion and align with it accurately, deliberately, and before it becomes obvious to everyone. That is rarer than initiative and considerably harder to fake.

Who you have already been following

Most people arrive at this hexagram assuming the question is whether to follow. It is not. The question is what you are following now, since nobody is doing none of it.

The second and third lines exist to make that concrete. The second attaches to what is small and near at hand while something larger goes by, and the text is blunt that indiscriminate receptivity is the failure rather than the virtue. The third sits between a convenient option and a better one, and the release it asks for costs something real, because the convenient thing is usually also the familiar thing.

The first line quietly reframes the whole business. It says the standard has changed, that old commitments may need to be let go in order to align with what is actually unfolding, and that this release is a form of clarity rather than a betrayal. That is the most difficult sentence in the hexagram and the one worth carrying out of it.

Hexagram 17 in love and relationships

You are adapting to who this person actually is rather than to the version you had in mind. That adjustment is the work itself, not a concession you are making to get to it.

The pattern it keeps returning to is the difference between accommodating someone and aligning with them. Accommodation is unilateral and quietly accumulates a debt. Alignment is a judgment you keep making, and the second line's warning about attaching indiscriminately applies directly: a relationship where one person adapts to everything is not more harmonious, it is less specific.

The sixth line is where this gets serious. It describes commitment carried so far that turning back has stopped being the question, and it declines to say whether that is devotion or a trap. Marriages contain both, sometimes in the same year, and the figure's refusal to sort them is honest rather than evasive.

Hexagram 17 at work and in career

Attach yourself to the thing that is genuinely working rather than to the thing you planned. Now, rather than once you have been proven right about the plan.

A strategy needs to change. A company discovers its real business was the second product. A career decision arrives where the honest answer is that your original plan has been outrun by events. The first line's permission to release old commitments is the operative one, and the figure is clear that loyalty to a superseded plan is not integrity.

If people are currently following you, the fourth line is yours. It carries real magnetism and says plainly that success at this position can corrupt the purpose underneath it, at which point leadership becomes manipulation wearing better clothes. The check it proposes is whether the thing you are pointing people toward would still matter if you were not the one leading it.

One of only four pairs in the book

Hexagram 17's opposite is 18, Work on What Has Been Spoiled. So is its inverse. Two different operations on the pattern, one destination.

Only four pairs in the whole book do that: 11 and 12, 53 and 54, 63 and 64, and this one. Whatever relationship 17 and 18 have, the geometry insists on it twice.

The content earns the arrangement. Following means adapting to a live situation as it moves. Its partner is the work of repairing something that was allowed to rot precisely because nobody adapted while there was still time. One figure is what you do when the situation is moving. The other is the bill for the years you did not.

What actually deserves it

The fifth line is the only place in this hexagram where following is presented without qualification, and what it requires is specific: not submission, but a wholehearted commitment to something genuinely excellent, made without reservation and without a hidden agenda.

Both halves matter. Wholeheartedness attached to the wrong thing is the failure the second and third lines describe. Discrimination that never commits is the failure of the person who examines every option and joins nothing.

The figure would like you to do the harder thing, which is to judge well and then go all the way in.

Judgment

'Following' describes a situation where genuine adaptability unlocks movement and progress. Thunder stirs beneath the lake - energy rises up into a yielding, receptive space, and this meeting produces real momentum rather than mere noise. The demand here is to drop pretense and align yourself honestly with what the moment actually calls for, not what you wish it called for. When you follow what is truly right rather than what flatters your ego, others follow you in turn.

Thunder sounds beneath the lake, and its energy rises upward into the open water above. The lake does not resist the thunder's impulse - it receives, shapes, and holds it, giving it direction. This teaches that receiving is not passive submission but an active skill: the art of aligning with real movement rather than forcing your own preferred direction onto events.

This person reads what a moment needs and answers it. They sense timing well, so their words and moves land when others can take them in. They do not fight what is already moving. They find the way in with it, and people feel met. The weak spot grows slowly. Each small yes is reasonable, but the yeses add up, and one day they cannot say what they wanted. They become skilled at moving and lose track of where to. What works for them is a plain habit: before agreeing, they ask what they would choose if no one were watching. Following suits them best when they have picked something worth following.

With other people

In a group, they become the one who senses where things are heading and helps everyone get there smoothly. The catch is that they can end up carrying the group's direction without ever adding their own. Played well, they follow only what has earned it. Others trust them because their agreement means something. When they do speak up, the room listens, since it knows they do not bend for nothing.
