Hexagram 40 in practice

The first hours after the pressure lifts

Something has just let go. The storm broke, the blockage opened, and for the first time in a long while there is nothing pressing on you. Hexagram 40 is interested almost exclusively in what people do next, and its assessment of that is not flattering.

The judgment splits the moment two ways and both halves are urgent. If there is nothing left to do, return to ordinary life quickly. If something does remain, do it now. What the figure treats as the error is neither hurrying nor resting; it is lingering in the place where the difficulty used to be, running the events back, waiting to feel differently before moving.

Thunder above water, and the pressure that built underneath has broken through to the surface. Nothing about that arrives gradually, which is why the correct response to it is also not gradual. The figure that precedes this one is 39, Obstruction, and 40 is what the release from it looks like from inside.

The hard part is over. What happens in the next few weeks decides whether it stays over.

Every relationship that survives a genuine crisis passes through this figure, and most of the damage that outlasts the crisis is done here rather than during it. The fight ended. The illness resolved. The person came back. And then the pattern of the difficult year continues on momentum, because nobody notices that the conditions producing it have gone.

The fifth line does the work. It is soft, in the ruler's place, and what restores this person's standing is the act of cutting themselves loose from whatever had them bound. Credibility follows from the separation itself. Not from explaining, not from an account of what happened, and not from an apology tour.

The opposite mistake gets its own position. Somebody hauling weight that was never theirs, which the text says advertises you to exactly the people you were trying to get out from under.

This is the reorganization that finally happened, the funding that landed, the blocking manager who left, the project that got unstuck. There is a window in which decisions are cheap and reversible and people are willing to move, and it closes as the new arrangement sets.

The second line names the specific work of that window. Three foxes hiding in a field that only just came clear. Old entanglements do not evaporate when the pressure lifts; they relocate into the new terrain and have to be picked out of it deliberately, cleanly and without a production made of it.

The judgment forbids one thing outright, and it is the most common thing people do with a win. No settling of old scores. The energy of a release is easy to spend on retribution against whoever caused the difficulty, and every unit spent that way is a unit not spent on the opening.

Three foxes in a cleared field

That second-line image deserves more than a passing mention because it is the most practically useful thing in the hexagram.

A field that has just been cleared looks empty. The obvious obstacle is gone and the relief is real, which makes it very hard to keep looking. What the line insists on is that some part of the old problem survived the resolution and is now sitting in the new landscape, harder to see precisely because the background changed.

Every organization that has just removed a bad executive has three foxes. So does every couple that has just resolved the thing. The residue is usually a habit, an alliance formed under the old conditions, or a story everybody learned to tell that no longer describes anything.

Move while the water is running

The image is a river after a long rain, clear and running fast, and the figure's counsel is to move with it rather than stand in the current working out what happened.

That is unsentimental about reflection, and pointed, in a book that generally prefers it. There is a kind of processing that is genuinely necessary and there is a kind that is a way of staying, and hexagram 40 is describing conditions under which the second is expensive.

The sixth line finishes the whole figure: one last obstacle up high, taken down from a distance, precisely, once. Then nothing further is required, and the file on the difficult period can actually close.
