The joint in a stalk of bamboo

'Jie' is the word for the node on a bamboo stem, the hard ring where growth pauses and the stalk seals itself before continuing. Bamboo reaches the height it does because of those interruptions. A hollow tube with no nodes in it buckles under its own length.

Hexagram 60 argues from that object. The limit is not what stops the growing. It is the structural element that makes height survivable, and a life with no nodes in it does not become freer. It becomes a tube.

Water above a lake gives the same claim in another form. The shores decide everything: the depth, the volume, where the overflow goes. Rain onto a lake already at its brim does not enlarge the lake, and the water that cannot be held runs off wasted or takes something with it.

Hexagram 60 in love and relationships

What is missing between you is not feeling but an agreed edge to things.

Which is a specific complaint and a common one. Two people who genuinely love each other, with no settled answer to who gets which evenings, what is discussed with whose family, how much of one person's difficulty the other absorbs. The figure's position is that unlimited availability is not generosity. It is an absence of shape, and it exhausts the person supplying it while giving the other nothing firm to stand on.

The first line asks that the boundary be set while things are calm, before any pressure tests it. Limits defined in a quiet week hold. The same limit improvised during a crisis reads as a retaliation, whatever it actually is.

Above that sits the failure people rarely name as one. Strength enough to act, and a wait extended past the moment when acting would have worked. The text is unsentimental about it: not every opportunity can be called back, and caution kept too long is its own way of getting the thing wrong.

Hexagram 60 at work and in career

Your capacity has a ceiling and the work has been arriving as though it does not.

The figure is direct about consequence. The third line has somebody who ignored their own limits meeting the return of everything they failed to contain, and the text frames that not as a punishment but as feedback arriving on schedule. What it asks for afterwards is order re-established without self-pity, which is the harder half.

The fifth position is the one that makes this workable in an organization. A leader holding to the same standard they require of other people, so that the limit has authority because it is visibly binding on the person who set it. Constraints announced by somebody visibly exempt from them do not function as constraints. They function as information about the announcer.

The same courtyard, two verdicts

Two consecutive lines describe an identical act and the book assigns them opposite outcomes.

At the first position, staying inside the door and the courtyard is blameless. At the second, staying inside the gate and the courtyard brings misfortune. Nothing about the behaviour has changed. What changed is the moment it is performed in, and the figure lets the contradiction stand without smoothing it.

That refusal is the most useful thing here. Restraint is not a virtue this hexagram endorses in general; it is correct at one position and a failure at the next. Anybody with a temperament naturally inclined to holding back can read those two lines in sequence and locate which of them is describing their week.

Sweet limitation and galling limitation

The book grades limits by what they do to the person living under them, and it uses two words for the result.

Sweet limitation is the fifth line and the fourth: a boundary genuinely internalized, so that energy moves freely inside the channel instead of pushing against its walls. Nothing about it feels like deprivation, because the shape has stopped being experienced as an imposition.

Galling limitation is the top line, where the structure has grown too severe for human endurance and has begun crushing what it existed to sustain. The text says perseverance here brings misfortune, which is the book contradicting its own favourite instruction, and it does so deliberately. Even the boundaries need bounding. A rule that no longer serves its purpose is not made better by being kept faithfully.
